A New Found Strength

I attended my first Powerlifting Competition last week, a new venture for me after starting my training for these events. It was truly eye-opening to witness the incredible power of the competitors, not just physically but mentally. People from all walks of life came together to confront their inner demons, pushing themselves both mentally and physically. For some, like myself, it even had a spiritual dimension. It was a profound experience to see how challenging it can be to pursue your goals in front of a large audience.

As a kid, I didn’t engage in sports as much because I was more inclined toward books and had some apprehension about sports. It wasn’t until middle school that I started getting involved in physical activities and competitions. Even then, I often felt like I didn’t quite fit in, facing injuries and a lack of skill. However, there were coaches and individuals who saw potential in me, a notion that continues to influence me in both my writing and weightlifting pursuits.

During the competition, not only did I get to support a friend but I also witnessed a man lift an astonishing 760 lbs. as if it were effortless. Such a feat is something few can even dream of achieving, but it ignited a fire within me to pursue what I desire.

So, where does this leave me?

In both writing and weightlifting, I see them as building blocks that complement each other. I cherish the artistic aspects they bring to my life, from the creative flow in storytelling to the artistry of lifting weights. Witnessing individuals push through adversity, whether in literature or on the lifting platform, is incredibly inspiring. Sculpting one’s body to peak physical condition is a work of art in itself.

What I’ve come to appreciate about both of these art forms is that many people who enter these domains often come from a place of loneliness, depression, fear, shame, or bullying. I can relate to some of these struggles, and finding something I can take pride in has been a powerful motivator.

There is beauty in these sports and creative outlets, but it’s essential not to forget the journey that leads to success. It’s not just about the end result; it’s about the effort that goes into an athlete’s training, dietary choices, sacrifices, and the memories they may gain or lose. Similarly, writing involves long nights dedicated to storytelling. Goals are always at the forefront of our minds, and whether we’re athletes or professionals, we must take risks and endure moments of solitude. Sometimes, it’s weeks or months of grinding to achieve something we desire deeply.

I consider myself a student of both worlds, both in lifting and in writing. I am grateful for the path I am forging, and I eagerly anticipate where it will lead me. Even if there are individuals ahead of me in these pursuits, there are always those who can show me the way.
