The Art of Poetry

It is undeniable that art holds beauty, but perhaps its most defining aspect is that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, as Margaret Wolfe Hungerford eloquently stated in 1878. When we immerse ourselves in the world of poetry, each of us perceives it through a unique lens. I recall my days as an undergraduate, where we analyzed poetry and drew distinct interpretations from each piece. Whether it was the verses of Shakespeare or a contemporary poem like “The Elephant in the Room,” both left a profound impact on our perception of art.

Shakespeare’s work, while revered by many, can be challenging for some to grasp, and appreciation often depends on individual perspectives. On the other hand, “The Elephant in the Room” provides a thought-provoking depiction of society and life situations, allowing us to see the world through different angles.

This is precisely what entices me about art and poetry. In the modern age, art surrounds us, capturing our senses and leaving us yearning for more. Our society craves escapism and freedom, while street art and abstract forms beautifully reflect the current era. Poetry, on the other hand, finds its place in the overlooked corners of life, from three-worded quotes on TikTok to video essays narrating an artist’s small adventures.

Contemporary poets often portray themes of love, death, and birth through evocative imagery, conveying the essence of their existence: “How do I navigate through life and find my purpose?” In songs like Kendrick Lamar’s “Feel,” pain finds an outlet through storytelling, drawing inspiration from family, friends, and the world that surrounds us. The beauty of such art and poetry lies in the ability to express profound emotions through simple ideas or reminders. Just as Kendrick expresses his feelings:

“Feel like removing myself, no feelings involved

I feel for you, I’ve been in the field for you

It’s real for you, right? Shit, I feel like

Ain’t nobody prayin’ for me”

However, this is just one facet of poetry. In today’s world, what captivates many is the resonance of love and imagery on platforms like TikTok. Vivid visuals shape aesthetic perspectives, while poignant tones resonate with the inner child that still dwells within us. It’s a captivating beauty, one that speaks directly to the soul. Even in my own videos, you can escape with the boy who embarks on a journey to explore the world through his writing and fogged lenses.

So, how does one create poetry through the lens of the world, and what resonates the most with me? Poetry emerges from our intimate connection with life’s intricate tapestry, interwoven with personal experiences and feelings. What speaks to me most is the authenticity in poetic expressions, the ability to evoke emotions that touch the hearts of others. It is the profound connection between words and the human experience that has the power to transform both the poet and the reader. I find myself drawn to poems that carry the weight of raw emotions, those that uncover the beauty hidden in the ordinary and celebrate the human spirit in all its complexities.

In conclusion, the world of poetry beckons with its boundless possibilities to connect, express, and explore. Each verse is an invitation to embrace diverse perspectives and discover the beauty that surrounds us, making us feel seen and understood in a world that often seems chaotic and disconnected. It is within this realm that I find solace, purpose, and the freedom to share my voice with the world, leaving behind fragments of my soul for others to cherish.
